Buildings are being promised the next great real estate technology on a weekly basis. The promises of the future of Mobility and 5G create exciting opportunities as well. However, it also opens doors to many new cybersecurity fears.
What are buildings doing to protect the many building systems already in place? Buildings strive for LEED and other Certifications and spend a lot of money doing so. Why aren’t owners carving out budgets for cybersecurity of their buildings? Buildings are evolving rapidly from connected to intelligent to truly smart buildings.
A typical building is a complex environment with dozens of vendor types. BMS, Wifi, Digital Signage, Lighting controls, Security access, Cameras, Elevators to name a few. Buildings typically allow all the vendors to operate as separate entities on their own proprietary networks. How many of these different vendors are truly IT Companies prepared for the newest playground for hackers, intelligent and smart buildings? How many networks and devices range from limited to no cybersecurity protection?
Cybersecurity to buildings means far more than protecting from ransomware attacks as there is now a human component involved. We’ve all heard stories and read articles about digital signage being hacked and other seemingly harmless breaches, if there is such a thing as harmless.
Fast forward and consider the human implications when card access systems get taken down and doors can’t open trapping people inside. Elevators being breached during the morning rush full of passengers and shut down without the capability to open and someone has a medical event. Heating and cooling systems being taken over on very hot or cold days. Building Management data being breached from a vendor device that happened to be attached to their corporate LAN.
No matter your building size or where it is in the connected to intelligent to truly smart phase, you must protect your data. Who is more active and working harder at their craft? Cyber criminals who are targeting the next frontier of smart buildings with all the exploitable devices and networks? Or is it the many vendors that aren’t truly in the IT Cybersecurity business?
